Some musings on race and star trek

SPOILERS if you haven’t seen Into Darkness yet.

Does anyone know why Khan was changed from Nordic to Indian in the original Space Seed? I’m trying to get a grasp on the racial politics here.

Never mind that he was played by a Mexican, I’m looking for creator intent.

I’m trying to decide whether the whitewashing of the role is a good thing, a bad thing, or best ignored entirely. But I’m lacking facts.

Does Khan’s race serve the story? Is it important? Or should I be against whitewashing in general because of white privilege? Cumberbatch is a damn fine actor, maybe that’s the only important thing.

If Khan was conceived as an Indian because it was scarier to white audiences that way, maybe recasting the role is a good move.

“(Khan) was originally conceived of as a Nordic superman by scriptwriter Carey Wilber before his ancestry was changed in script revisions.”

That’s from Wikipedia. I’d love to know the significance of the change, why it was made.

If they rewrote the character for Montalban, they can rewrite the character for anyone who can play the role well. Race shouldn't matter.

I wonder if the backlash would have been worse if they had cast Khan as a turban-wearing Sikh. He does some nasty shit in this film.

Casting Khan really is a bit of a Kobayashi Maru in that regard.

Got a question.... I just started doing comics again, and had some huge days of traffic. I am trying to ride the wave a bit by keeping at 5 days a week. Not sure how long I can keep that up between work and ink, on top of the comic.

Now coloring..... it takes me about 20 minutes to make a comic ( My comics are pretty loose ), but when I color it adds A LOT of time. Do you find that coloring your comic helps capture more readers? Is plain black and while ( no shading no nothing ) a sign of "laziness" with your product?

I have no idea if I did an intro here, my comic is Mayoking Comics ( http://mayoking.com )
